Sample Exchange Letter

Example How-To Letter For Soliciting Joint Website Marketing and Promotional Opportunities

Have you ever come across a blog or website that was related to your own site but not so much so that it would constitute a direct competitor?

Have you ever wondered how to go about writing up a proposal for a joint promotional effort you believe will benefit both of your companies?

I recently wrote one of these such proposals, only unfortunately the site did not provide a functional email address or any other means of contacting the webmaster in charge of it.

Instead of simply deleting the email that I invested a good bit of time writing, I decided to post it here in hopes a reader of this blog may browse through it and gain some insights as to how mutually beneficial marketing deals are struck between independent webmasters and site developers.

Teddy Blake,

First, I would like to personally thank you for visiting my blog and let you know that your readership is much appreciated.  I saw your comment on the satirical post I wrote about
Miss Piggy stripping naked to increase Swine Flu awareness.  I just published your comment, and I again greatly appreciate your contribution to the discussion.  I too am glad that your cousins are in good health.

The other reason I am writing is to propose an exchange of dofollow links from our respective sites.  Specifically, I would remove the nofollow attribute from the link in your comment on my blog post for starters.

Additionally, I will submit five of your blog posts to an extremely popular social media site on which my submissions routinely gain front-page exposure and direct massive amounts of PR to those sites lucky enough to be linked to from my profile on this particular website.

If you're asking yourself "why can't I just submit the stories to this site myself?"  You can.  However, I have attained a special senior status at this site which grants me special privileges such as the ability to endorse sites, immediately get breaking news to the homepage and most importantly, the nofollow attribute is removed from anything and everything I submit, so the massive amounts of pagerank flowing through that site and through my profile are passed along to the destination page, drastically increasing it's performance within search indefinitely. New users' links all have nofollow embedded within them, and it takes about a year of frequent, high-quality submissions and comments to become a one of these super-users. Since the site has grown so much so rapidly, the bar is constantly being raised in terms of the requirements necessary for one to achieve this elusive status.

You can pick out which of your blog posts you'd like me to submit.

Should you agree to my proposal, here are the specifics of what I'd like in return:

Health Columnist Pam Egan - Expert health and medical professional with over 20 years of clinical experience.

Probiotic Supplements Help Get Rid of Acne - How regular supplementation with probiotics can help combat acne and help keep your skin looking beautiful.

Natural Remedies to Get Rid of Acne - Article detailing natural remedies that are effective in preventing and treating acne.

Vitamin D3
- Website devoted entirely to news, articles, photos, videos and expert analysis pertaining to vitamin d3, which is arguably the hottest topic in all of health and nutrition-related media at this point in time.

The Natural MD - Site featuring articles related-to natural and alternative medicine.

All-in-all, should you accept my offer, you will reap tremendous net pagerank gains and will see your traffic grow exponentially, and I think we will both benefit tremendously from the dramatic increases in site traffic we'd both experience were you to go along with my proposal.

The final thing I have to say is that if you're wondering why I am willing to trade you far more pagerank than I would receive in return should you agree to the proposal as I have outlined it, I am seeking to diversify my inbound link portfolio as much as possible and don't need the pagerank nearly as much as I need links from sites that aren't a part of my network.  Notice, nowhere in this proposal do I suggest reciprocal linking in which site-a links to site-b and vice versa.  The fact that there would be no direct reciprocal links will greatly enhance the value of the links in the eyes of the search engines.

Please let me know if you're interested.  I can be reached at this email address, as well as by phone.

Sincerely and Best Regards,

Peter Egan Jr
